Dr. Gabor Maté

"Trauma is not what happens to you, it's what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you."
Trauma is a powerful force that can shake us to our core, but it does not define who we are—God does. While painful experiences may leave deep wounds, they do not determine our identity, value, or future. Scripture reminds us in Ephesians 2:10 that we are “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We are not defined by what has happened to us; we are defined by the One who created us with purpose, dignity, and immeasurable worth.
Trauma can test our resilience, challenge our faith, and leave us questioning our strength. Yet, even in life's most difficult seasons, God equips us to persevere and overcome. As 1 John 5:4–5 declares, “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” Though we all face moments of darkness, those moments do not have the final word. It is often through adversity that we discover the courage, endurance, and inner strength that God has placed within us.
In our weakest moments, God’s presence becomes our greatest source of strength. 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us of His promise: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” When we feel broken, overwhelmed, or uncertain, God's grace sustains us. He meets us in our pain, walks beside us in our healing, and empowers us to move forward one step at a time.
Your journey may not be easy, but it is not without purpose. Every challenge you face presents an opportunity for growth, healing, and transformation. God encourages us in Joshua 1:9: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid.
TRAUMA
Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder CPTSD
CPTSD is a trauma-related condition that can develop after experiencing prolonged, repeated, or inescapable trauma, especially during childhood or within close relationships. Unlike PTSD, which is often associated with a single traumatic event, CPTSD is frequently linked to ongoing experiences such as childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence, human trafficking, captivity, chronic emotional abuse, or other long-term traumatic circumstances.
Common Symptoms of CPTSD
Core PTSD Symptoms
In addition to the core symptoms of PTSD, a person with CPTSD may struggle with:
Intrusive memories or flashbacks
Nightmares
Hypervigilance (feeling constantly on guard)
Avoidance of trauma reminders
Strong emotional or physical reactions to triggers

Emotional Dysregulation
Negative Self-Concept
Relational Difficulties
Persistent feelings of worthlessness
Deep shame or guilt
Belief that one is "damaged" or "broken"
Difficulty trusting others
Fear of abandonment or rejection
Challenges establishing healthy boundaries
Patterns of codependency or people-pleasing
Difficulty managing emotions
Intense sadness, anger, fear, or shame
Emotional overwhelm or numbness
How Trauma Shapes Survival Strategies
Many individuals with CPTSD developed survival strategies that were necessary during traumatic experiences but became problematic later. These may include:
Excessive caregiving
Perfectionism
Hyper-independence
People-pleasing
Controlling one's environment to feel safe
For many trauma survivors, control isn't about being controlling;
it was once a survival skill designed to reduce danger and unpredictability.

In Him we live and move and have our being.
Acts 17:28
CPTSD and Healing
Healing from CPTSD often involves:
For Christians, healing may also include:
Trauma-informed therapy
Learning emotional regulation skills
Developing healthy boundaries
Reconnecting with one's authentic identity
Building safe, supportive relationships
Addressing the nervous system's trauma responses
Deepening trust in God's character
Releasing burdens that belong to God
Finding security in one's identity in Christ
Learning the difference between responsibility and surrender
Note:
CPTSD is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) in the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), though diagnostic approaches can vary by country and clinician.
If someone believes they may have CPTSD, a licensed mental health professional trained in trauma can provide an appropriate assessment and support.

Trauma often teaches us that we must manage everything to stay safe. Healing teaches us that not everything is ours to carry.
For many survivors, "being still" is not passive; it is a courageous act of trust after years of living in survival mode.
As Exodus 14:14 reminds us:
"The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still."

Mind
In moments of adversity, remember that you possess a remarkable inner strength that can carry you through life's greatest challenges. While PTSD may result from painful and heartbreaking experiences, it does not define who you are. Deep within you is an extraordinary capacity for resilience, healing, and growth. Even when the journey feels difficult, know that you have the strength to rise above the challenges you face and move toward a future filled with hope and possibility.
No matter how many times life tests your resilience, never lose sight of your ability to heal and transform. Recovery is not always linear, and healing takes time, but every step forward is a testament to your courage and determination. Complex PTSD can feel overwhelming, often clouding your thoughts, emotions, and sense of identity. Yet it does not have the power to define your future. With perseverance, self-compassion, faith, and support, you can break free from its hold, reclaim your voice, and rediscover your authentic self.
Your past is not a limitation; it is part of your story and a foundation upon which you can build a brighter, stronger, and more purposeful future. The challenges you have endured can become stepping stones toward wisdom, resilience, and personal growth. Every obstacle overcome is evidence of the strength that already exists within you.
Awaken the warrior within. Take intentional and inspired steps toward healing, freedom, and restoration. Trust in your ability to overcome adversity and cultivate lasting inner peace. As Romans 12:2 reminds us, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Body
Healing from trauma is a journey that involves caring not only for the mind and spirit but also for the body. Your body has carried you through every challenge, every hardship, and every moment of survival. Honoring it with compassion and intentional care is an important step toward healing and restoration. By nourishing yourself with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods, staying hydrated, engaging in regular physical activity, and prioritizing restorative sleep, you provide your body with the support it needs to recover, rebuild, and thrive.
The path to healing may feel overwhelming at times, but transformation often begins with small, consistent acts of self-care. Every healthy choice—whether it is taking a walk, drinking more water, preparing a nourishing meal, or allowing yourself adequate rest—is a meaningful investment in your well-being. These seemingly simple actions can strengthen your physical health, reduce stress, improve emotional resilience, and help restore a sense of balance and stability.
Remember that healing is not about perfection; it is about progress. Be patient with yourself as you move forward, celebrating each step, no matter how small. Within you is an incredible capacity for renewal, strength, and recovery. As you care for your body, you are also reclaiming your power and reinforcing the resilience that has carried you this far.
Embrace this journey with courage, grace, and determination, trusting that each step forward brings you closer to greater health, vitality, and wholeness. When the burdens of life feel heavy, find comfort in the words of Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Let this promise remind you that you do not have to carry your struggles alone. God offers strength for the journey, rest for the weary, and hope for the days ahead.
Take that first or next step with faith, knowing that healing is possible. As you nurture your body with care and intention, you are creating a foundation for renewed strength, deeper peace, and a healthier, more vibrant future.

Spirit
As you journey toward healing, allow the Spirit to illuminate your path and strengthen your heart. Embrace the qualities God desires to cultivate within you—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These God-given attributes provide comfort, guidance, and strength, helping you navigate life's challenges with grace and resilience.
No matter what trials or hardships you have endured, remember that God is always present, walking beside you and offering healing for what has been broken. His love has the power to restore hope where there has been despair, bring peace where there has been turmoil, and provide strength where there has been weakness. As you welcome the fruits of the Spirit into your daily life, allow them to encourage, uplift, and empower you to rise above the obstacles that stand in your way.
Your spirit is far stronger and more resilient than you may realize. Through faith, perseverance, and dependence on God, you can overcome adversity and continue growing into the person He created you to be. Trust in the transforming power of God's love and the guidance of the Holy Spirit as you move forward on your healing journey. Every step taken in faith is a step toward greater wholeness, purpose, and spiritual renewal.
Within you lies tremendous potential waiting to be nurtured and revealed. Believe in the unique gifts, strengths, and purpose God has placed within your life. Allow the Holy Spirit to lead and sustain you, trusting that He will provide wisdom, comfort, and direction along the way.
As 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Let this truth be firmly planted in your heart. Release fear, embrace God's strength, and step boldly into the future He has prepared for you. With faith as your foundation and God's presence as your guide, you can experience healing, growth, and the abundant life He desires for you.
